South-facing is the selling point
The first thing a Chinese apartment listing tells you is which way it faces. 朝南 — facing south — commands a premium, because a south-facing room takes low winter sun all day, and in a country where much of the south has no central heating that is warmth rather than atmosphere. North-facing rooms are cheaper and colder. Addresses are built to match the buildings: the compound, then 号楼 the building, 单元 the stairwell, and 室 the apartment — which is why a Chinese address holds more numbers than a Western one and is read largest first.
