Pudong
Pudong, the land east of the Huangpu, was mostly farmland, wharves and factories until 1990, when the central government announced its development as a new economic zone. Bridges, tunnels and subway lines followed through the 1990s, and the Lujiazui financial district rose on the riverbank opposite the Bund. As the old city was redeveloped, many families from central Shanghai were rehoused in Pudong and other outer districts. At first many were reluctant, as the old saying shows: Pudong was far from work, family and the life they knew. Over the following decades, as transport improved and the area grew, many came to value the space and modern facilities, though some still missed the old neighborhoods. 秦阿姨's story — tears in 1995, comfort later, and a lasting attachment to the lane — is a common one, and it foreshadows the choice 顾阿婆 is about to make.
